2. About the Parish

Brief Parish History

St. Joseph Karuthi Catholic Parish was established on 7 December 2013 and officially blessed and opened by Most Rev. Peter Kairo, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Nyeri. The parish was carved out of Sts. Peter and Paul Kariko Parish.

The parish is located in Chinga Ward, Othaya South Sub-County, Nyeri County, extending into parts of Mukurwe-ini Sub-County and bordering Murang’a County to the east.

At its establishment, the parish consisted of three Local Churches:

  • St. Joseph Karuthi

  • St. James Mairoini

  • St. John the Baptist Gathanji

In 2016, St. Paul Githagara Local Church was transferred from Mukurwe-ini Parish to Karuthi Parish. Continued pastoral growth led to the establishment of two additional Local Churches in 2018:

  • St. John Paul II Githuguri

  • Blessed Irene Nyaatha Kiamwathi

Today, the parish comprises six Local Churches:

Since its establishment, the parish has produced one priest and currently has two seminarians.
