About the Parish

Mary Mother of God Kamatu Catholic Parish is the newest parish in the Karatina Deanery of the Archdiocese of Nyeri. The parish is situated in Kirimukuyu Ward, Mathira Sub-County, Nyeri County, within an area predominantly served by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA).

The parish was carved out of Holy Cross Ngandu Catholic Parish to bring pastoral services closer to the growing Catholic community.

Although officially established in 2021, the vision for an independent parish dates back to 1974, when Christian leaders and faithful from the area proposed the creation of a new parish. At that time, Holy Cross Ngandu Parish had approximately forty outstations, many of which were located far from the parish centre, making access to the Sacraments and pastoral services difficult.

After many years of prayer, planning, and preparation, the proposal was approved by the Archdiocese of Nyeri.

On 12 December 2021, His Grace Most Rev. Anthony Muheria, Archbishop of Nyeri, officially inaugurated Mary Mother of God Kamatu Catholic Parish, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the faith journey of the local Catholic community.

Sacred Heart of Jesus Gathugu Catholic Parish is a vibrant faith community within the Karatina Deanery of the Archdiocese of Nyeri. Located in Konyu Location, Mathira East Sub-County, the parish serves thousands of faithful through evangelization, sacramental ministry, Christian formation, and pastoral outreach.

Since its establishment in 1999, the parish has continued to experience remarkable spiritual and numerical growth, becoming a centre of vibrant Catholic life in the region.

Our History

Sacred Heart of Jesus Gathugu Catholic Parish was officially established on 28 March 1999 after being carved out of Mary Immaculate Karatina Catholic Parish by His Grace Archbishop Nicodemus Kirima.

The founding Parish Priest was Fr. Rufus Wambugu, who guided the young parish through its formative years and laid a strong foundation for its spiritual and pastoral development.

At its inception, the parish consisted of only five local churches. As the Catholic faith continued to grow within the area, two additional local churches were established, bringing the total to seven local churches serving approximately 3,384 faithful.

The parish has witnessed continuous growth in Christian life through increasing numbers of Baptisms, First Holy Communions, Confirmations, and Christian marriages.

It has also been richly blessed with priestly and religious vocations. To date, the parish has produced six priests, including four diocesan priests and two religious priests, as well as one religious deacon and one seminarian currently in formation. In addition, thirteen religious sisters from the parish serve in various congregations.

Holy Cross Ngandu Catholic Parish is one of the historic parishes of the Archdiocese of Nyeri. Located within Karatina Deanery, the parish has faithfully served generations of Christians through evangelization, sacramental ministry, education, and community development.

Since its establishment in 1951, the parish has remained a beacon of faith, nurturing Christian communities while responding to the spiritual and social needs of the people.

Our History

Holy Cross Ngandu Catholic Parish was officially established on 3 November 1951 as a centre of Christian faith, evangelization, and community service.

The first priest assigned to the parish was Fr. Jacomino Camissasa, who laid the foundation of the parish through dedicated pastoral care and missionary work. During the Mau Mau Emergency, however, insecurity in the region made it difficult for missionaries to continue serving safely. In 1953, Fr. Camissasa was advised to return to Mathari Mission.

Although the parish no longer had a resident priest, the Christian community continued to receive pastoral care. Fr. Janelli, based at Mathari Mission, regularly travelled to Ngandu to celebrate the Sacraments, minister to the sick, support those in need, and strengthen the faith of the community. He worked closely with the Consolata Sisters, ensuring that both spiritual and charitable ministries continued despite the challenging circumstances.

In 1955, Fr. Richard Rossi was appointed to re-establish the parish. His ministry marked a period of remarkable growth as he established numerous prayer centres throughout the surrounding villages, bringing pastoral care, catechesis, and the celebration of the Sacraments closer to the faithful.

On 25 October 1964, Holy Cross Ngandu Church was temporarily closed, and the faithful were directed to worship at Mary Immaculate Karatina Catholic Parish. The former church premises were designated for the development of Bishop Gatimu Ngandu Girls High School. Although this transition presented challenges, the Christian community remained steadfast in faith.

Recognizing the growing pastoral needs of the Catholic faithful, Archbishop Caesar Maria Gatimu approved the reopening of Holy Cross Ngandu Parish in 1968, allowing the local Christian community once again to worship within their own parish.

A new phase of pastoral growth began in 1985 when Fr. Bartholomew Mwangi became Parish Priest. During his tenure, six additional outstations were established, greatly expanding the parish’s pastoral outreach.

Over the years, the parish has continued to grow under the dedicated leadership of its parish priests, strengthening both its spiritual life and community development.

Situated in Iria-ini Ward along the Karatina–Kerugoya Highway, approximately 5 kilometres from Karatina Town, the parish serves the spiritual needs of the faithful through worship, evangelization, Christian formation, and community outreach.

Since its establishment as an independent parish, St. Joseph Miiri has continued to grow both spiritually and physically, becoming a thriving centre of Catholic faith in the region.

Our History

The origins of St. Joseph Miiri Catholic Parish date back to its time as Zone B of Mary Immaculate Karatina Catholic Parish. As the Catholic population continued to grow, the need for an independent parish became evident.

In 2010, the parish was officially established by Most Rev. Peter Kairo, then Archbishop of Nyeri, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the pastoral care of the Christian community.

One of the parish’s greatest achievements has been the construction of its permanent church. Through the dedication and generosity of the faithful, the parish undertook the construction of the main sanctuary over a period of six years.

On 1 July 2018, the completed church was solemnly consecrated by Most Rev. Anthony Muheria, Archbishop of Nyeri, in a memorable celebration that marked an important milestone in the parish’s history.

The parish has also experienced remarkable pastoral growth. It began with five local churches and has since expanded to nine local churches, organized into Zone A and Zone B, enabling more effective pastoral care and evangelization throughout the parish.

Today, St. Joseph Miiri Catholic Parish continues to grow as a welcoming community rooted in prayer, the Sacraments, and the mission of proclaiming Christ to all.

Mary Immaculate Karatina Catholic Parish is one of the oldest and most influential parishes in the Karatina Deanery of the Archdiocese of Nyeri. Situated in Karatina Town, the parish serves the town and the surrounding communities, remaining a vibrant centre of worship, evangelization, and Christian formation.

Since its establishment in 1964, the parish has played a significant role in the growth of the Catholic faith in the region. Through dedicated pastoral leadership and the commitment of generations of faithful, it has nurtured numerous Christian communities and given rise to several daughter parishes that continue to serve the people of God.

Our History

Mary Immaculate Karatina Catholic Parish was established in 1964 after being separated from Ngandu Catholic Parish through the efforts of Fr. Richard Rossi and Bro. Bruno Viola.

Before becoming a parish, the area was served by the Consolata Missionaries, who provided pastoral care from Ngandu Parish. For over three decades, the Consolata Fathers, Brothers, and Sisters laid a strong spiritual and developmental foundation by establishing outstations, promoting evangelization, and supporting education and community development.

In 1996, pastoral leadership was entrusted to the diocesan clergy of the Archdiocese of Nyeri. Building upon the legacy of the missionaries, the diocesan priests continued strengthening the faith of the Christian community while expanding parish infrastructure and pastoral services.

As the Catholic population continued to grow, the original Karatina Parish became the mother parish of several new parishes. Between 1987 and 2010, it gave rise to:

• St. Joseph Gikumbo Catholic Parish

• Gathugu Catholic Parish

• Miiri Catholic Parish

The creation of these daughter parishes brought the Church closer to the faithful, enabling greater access to the Holy Mass, the Sacraments, and pastoral care.

Today, Mary Immaculate Karatina Catholic Parish continues to flourish with 14 local churches, 84 Small Christian Communities, multiple Sunday Masses, a vibrant religious community of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Tarbes, and several priests serving both the parish and the wider Church.

About the Parish

St. Peter the Apostle Kabiru-ini Catholic Parish is a vibrant Catholic community within the Karatina Deanery of the Archdiocese of Nyeri. Since its establishment as a parish in 2010, it has continued to grow in faith, evangelization, Christian formation, and service to the people of God.

Inspired by its patron, St. Peter the Apostle, the parish remains committed to proclaiming the Gospel, celebrating the Sacraments, nurturing Christian families, and fostering an active and welcoming faith community.

Our History

The history of St. Peter the Apostle Kabiru-ini Catholic Parish dates back to 1959, when the Christian community was established as an outstation of Ngandu Catholic Parish during the colonial period.

Around that time, members of the local community generously donated land to the Catholic Church, where Fr. Mario oversaw the construction of a dispensary. Completed in 1960, the dispensary became an important centre for healthcare and evangelization.

A nursery school was later established on the same site, with its classroom serving as the first place of worship for the Catholic faithful. The first catechism classes were conducted by Mr. Peter Riri, whose dedication laid a firm spiritual foundation for the growth of the Church in the area.

As the Catholic population continued to increase, the faithful united to construct the first church, which faithfully served the community for many years.

The continued growth of the Christian community eventually created the need for an independent parish. On 23 August 2010, an Interim Executive Committee was constituted to oversee preparations for the transition from Kahira-ini Catholic Parish and the establishment of the new parish.

The committee comprised:

Following these preparations, St. Peter the Apostle Kabiru-ini Catholic Parish was officially established on 1 September 2010.

The first Parish Priest, the late Rev. Fr. Matthew Mwaniki, was officially received on the day of the parish’s inauguration and welcomed by Rev. Fr. J.B. Ndung’u, then Archbishop’s Secretary.

Under Fr. Matthew Mwaniki’s leadership, the parish experienced remarkable spiritual and infrastructural growth. Recognizing the need for a larger place of worship, he initiated the construction of the current parish church. The foundation stone was laid by His Grace Archbishop Peter Kairo on 10 February 2013. He also commenced construction of the parish priest’s residence.

Today, the parish continues to flourish through evangelization, catechesis, youth formation, and pastoral outreach while remaining faithful to its mission of proclaiming Christ to all.

About the Parish

Our Lady Consolata Giakaibii Catholic Parish is one of the vibrant Catholic communities within the Archdiocese of Nyeri. Located in Magutu Ward, Mathira East Sub-County, Nyeri County, the parish has grown from a humble catechetical centre into a flourishing Christian community dedicated to evangelization, faith formation, and holistic human development.

Today, the parish serves more than 1,000 families through eleven outstations and over 110 Small Christian Communities, fostering active participation in the life and mission of the Church.

Our History

The history of Giakaibii Catholic Church dates back to 1952, when it was established as a catechetical centre under Ngandu Parish during the leadership of Fr. Rossi, IMC.

Mr. Samuel Karani became the first catechist and supervised the construction of the initial mud-and-thatch structure that sheltered catechumens from harsh weather. The church was built within the colonial village of Giakaibii near the old nursery school, on land associated with the trench that had been dug during the Mau Mau Emergency.

As the Christian community continued to grow, the temporary structure was upgraded to a timber church through the dedication of Catechist Christopher Mwai (“Mr. Man”), one of the earliest catechists trained at Mugoiri. Mr. Patrick Muchoki, who served as Church Chairman, later oversaw the construction of the permanent stone church.

The church building continued to expand over the years under the pastoral care of Fr. Felice while the area still belonged to Karatina Parish. Today, the parish continues this legacy with the construction of a new modern parish church.

Establishment as a Parish

Giakaibii Parish was officially erected in August 1987 by Rt. Rev. Caesar Maria Gatimu, then Bishop of Nyeri, after being carved from Karatina Catholic Parish.

The inaugural Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Fr. Mino Francis Vaccari, then Diocesan Administrator.

The first Parish Priest was Fr. Matthew Mwaniki, assisted by Fr. Francis Kinyari.

St. Joseph Gikumbo Catholic Parish is a vibrant faith community within the Archdiocese of Nyeri, serving the people of Magutu and the surrounding areas. Established to meet the growing pastoral needs of the faithful, the parish continues to proclaim the Gospel through worship, evangelization, Christian formation, and service.

Dedicated to St. Joseph, Husband of Mary, the parish strives to be a welcoming community where all encounter Christ through prayer, the sacraments, and active participation in the life of the Church.

Our History

St. Joseph Gikumbo Catholic Parish was established in 1997 after being carved out of Karatina Catholic Parish to better serve the growing Catholic population in Magutu. The parish became part of Karatina Deanery under the Archdiocese of Nyeri through the guidance of His Grace Most Rev. Nicodemus Kirima.

The founding Parish Priest, Fr. John Muturi, laid a strong foundation for the parish’s spiritual and physical growth. During his tenure, he initiated the construction of the parish church, renovated a former teachers’ residence at Gikumbo Secondary School into the priests’ residence, and acquired the parish’s first pastoral vehicle to support evangelization.

In 2003, Fr. Francis Mathenge assumed leadership of the parish. Through his pastoral leadership, the Christian community continued to grow in faith, and he successfully mobilized parishioners to construct a multipurpose parish hall.

He was succeeded by Fr. Mutero, who faithfully continued the work of evangelization and pastoral care until 2014, strengthening the parish’s spiritual life and community outreach.

From 2012 to 2016, Fr. Kinuthia served as Parish Priest and initiated the construction of the current priests’ residence, an important milestone in the parish’s infrastructure development.

In 2016, Fr. Godfrey Gichuki became Parish Priest and served until 2024. His tenure saw significant improvements to the parish facilities, including renovation of the church, construction of the perimeter wall, landscaping of the parish compound, and reorganization of the parish offices to improve service delivery.

On 20 May 2025, Fr. David Hunyu assumed leadership of the parish. One of his first major initiatives was the introduction of green energy through the installation of a solar power system, making the parish more environmentally sustainable and reducing operational costs.

Today, St. Joseph Gikumbo Parish continues to grow as a vibrant Christian community committed to faith, service, and the mission of the Church.
