About the Parish

Brief Parish History

Archangel Michael Chaka Catholic Parish was established in 2016 after the former St. Michael Kiganjo Parish was relocated to Chaka. Previously, the present parish centre was St. Joseph Chaka Local Church, an outstation of St. Michael Kiganjo Parish. During the transition, the patronage was changed from St. Michael to Archangel Michael to preserve the devotion to St. Michael among the faithful.

The transfer of the parish centre to Chaka was guided by three main considerations. First, Chaka was more centrally located within the parish boundaries. Secondly, Chaka Town had experienced rapid growth after becoming the headquarters of Nyeri North Sub-County, resulting in an increasing Catholic population. Thirdly, the Archdiocese of Nyeri planned to convert the former Sacred Heart Girls Secondary School into a Catholic university, with Kiganjo Church serving as the University Chaplaincy while continuing to minister to the faithful.

The Christians warmly embraced the transition, recognizing the educational and social opportunities the proposed Catholic university would bring to the area.

Under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Samuel Njigua, construction of the Parish Priest’s residence began immediately. The foundation stone was laid on 20 July 2016, and the completed residence was blessed and officially opened by Archbishop Peter Kairo on 26 June 2017.

Following the completion of the priest’s residence, the parish commenced construction of the new church. Groundbreaking for the parish church took place on 11 December 2018.
